Today in Music: September 9, 2010

On this date in 1965, an ad appears in the Hollywood Reporter that reads: "Madness folk & roll musicians, singers wanted for acting roles in new TV show. Parts for 4 insane boys!" Thousands respond, including David Crosby and Charles Manson, but Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork wow producers during the auditions and are christened The Monkees!

In 1978, U2 make one of their first live appearances, performing at the Top Hat Ballroom in Dublin, Ireland.

In 1989, New Kids On The Block score their second straight #1 single with "Hangin' Tough".
