On this day in 1958, Elvis Presley's mother Gladys dies of heart failure. At her funeral, Elvis is so consumed with grief that he cries uncontrollably and collapses. It is said that over 500 police officers were needed to keep the throngs of fans at bay at Forest Hill cemetary.
On August 14, 1962, Pete Best is kicked out of the Beatles. He stays on long enough to play one final gig with them the next night, but is then swiftly replaced by Ringo Starr, who is finishing a brief tenure with Rory Storm & The Hurricanes.
On this same day in 1965, the Beatles would perform for the final time on The Ed Sullivan Show. Although the performance wouldn't air until the next month, the band performed songs from their latest album (and movie) "Help!". They performed six songs, "I Feel Fine", "I'm Down", "Act Naturally", "Ticket To Ride", "Yesterday", and "Help!"
