I still remember the day in 2006 that Justin Hawkins announced his decision to leave The Darkness after entering rehab for substance abuse issues. It was only natural that a guy trying to stay on the straight-and-narrow after almost killing himself with mountains of blow would be fearful of returning to the very environment that almost led to his destruction in the first place.
Thankfully, Hawkins kept making music, unleashing a completely respectable cover of Sparks' "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us" under the name British Whale and forming the band Hot Leg, whose very underrated lone album went completely unnoticed.
Thankfully, by 2011, cooler heads prevailed - either he ran out of money or fell off the wagon, we dunno - and Hawkins rejoined his bandmates to rightfully kick-start The Darkness. After all, some things are just bigger and more important than your own sobriety and one of them is rock & roll.
The Darkness realize this now and, thankfully, their output as of late has been righteously stellar.
Anyhoo, check it out and grab their new album, Last Of Our Kind, when it drops this summer.
