Notice Anything Odd About The Cover Art For Phil Collins' Remasters Series?

The cover art for Phil's 2016 remaster of Face Value.

Much like his former band mate Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins is giving his solo catalog the proper remastering treatment that is necessary to entice fans to buy albums they more than likely already own. Unlike Gabriel, who merely restored the original vinyl album artwork, Phil Collins is going one step further in a move that might take some by surprise, but that others might not notice at all.

You may or may not have noticed that the above cover art for the newly remastered version of his 1981 solo debut Face Value seems, well, a bit different.than you remember. Turns out that the face you see is of Collins from 2015.

Your first impression might be that Collins is certainly older than he was 35 years ago, but that he hasn't changed all that much...until you revisit the original cover art:

Whoa, big difference, right? Then, of course, there's his updated cover srt to the newly remastered Hello, I Must Be Going:

Again, Collins appears a bit older, but still recognizable as the affable singer who scored a Top 10 smash with his remake of The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" and a Top 40 hit with the irascible "I Don't Care Anymore".

But then you re-familiarize yourself with the original cover art:

Whoa. It's hard to believe there was ever a time when the prematurely balding Collins ever looked young, but these new covers certainly do tell an interesting story and an unavoidable one at that:

Phil Collins, just like you and me, is getting older. The difference, of course, is that while you and I continue to post old photos of ourselves in our youthful prime on the occasional #TBT, Phil, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, is giving us all a sly jab by updating his cover art. The only thing he didn't do was re-title one of these albums Hey You Kids Get Out Of My Yard.

(Note: if you're anything like me, you're probably curious to see Phil's updated cover pic for Phil's 1985 album No Jacket Required. Sadly, the remastered version of this album has not yet been released and there is no confirmed date for its release. We will, of course, keep you posted as information is made available.)
