While there is certainly some common ground between the blues you find in Austin and that which is deeply rooted in the streets and clubs of this city, Chicago seems more intent on reliving past glories and lauding the likes of Buddy Guy and others who remain the face of Chicago blues music.
That's all fine and dandy, but where is the new face of Chicago blues?
I ask only because Austin seems to have found the new face of its own burgeoning blues scene in Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears and, well, it seems that Chicago should respond in kind. Sadly, so many of the blues acts in this town capable of bringing a sense of exploration and innovation to the genre seem more intent of playing tired licks for the tourists, where the bigger money is at.
Perhaps tonight a young set of eyes and ears will find themselves in the right place at the right time to hear Lewis and Co. breathe new life into "da blues" and be inspired to do the same.
Grab your tickets to see Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears at The Metro tonight! Doors open at 10PM!
