Do Eurythmics Belong In The Rock Hall?

As much as this writer personally adores Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, we liked them a helluva lot more when they were in the Tourists, that shit-hot new wave band led by Peet Combes (RIP) that had the audacity and misfortune of existing prior to MTV.

Of course, the millions of fans whose musical tastes have largely been shaped by the network would obviously disagree.

After all, Eurythmics were in heavy rotation! The Tourists were not and, therefore, must have sucked.

Had Eurythmics come into existence at any other time than when they did, it can be argued that they too would have met a similar fate as the Tourists.

After all, Eurythmics had already released one album, In The Garden, which had not been successful. MTV had come into existence only two months prior and was, itself, fighting to find an audience.

It was, however, a very powerful force in music by 1983, when the group released their second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) and was absolutely pivotal in breaking the singles "Sweet Dreams" and "Here Comes The Rain Again". In fact, one can argue that it is nearly impossible to hear a favorite Eurythmics song these days without immediately thinking of the video associated with that song.

For that, the band most certainly has MTV to thank.

So, it bears asking, should the RRHOF voting committee be considering the induction of Eurythmics or should they induct MTV instead?
