Our Thoughts on the New Green Day Single "Oh Love"!

You may remember that we at The Shit were the first news source on THE PLANET to break the story that Green Day's "American Idiot" was coming to Chicago straight from its successful run on Broadway, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we're doing back flips over the band's latest song, which was released on YouTube today.

The song, "Oh Love", is a faceless by-the-numbers pop tune that any number of fledgling Chicago bands could - and HAVE - written and recorded over the past couple decades. While it got those bands nothing but Tuesday and Wednesday gigs at Martyrs and Hoghead McDunna's, Green Day seems to think this generic power pop tune is worth singing from the rooftops.

As if that weren't bad enough, the band has not one but THREE studio albums set for release over the next several months. For those who thought "American Idiot" was a work of genius (insert "roll eyes" emoticon here), the band's bassist Mike Dirnt seems to think their new work is on par with The Rolling Stones' best work, saying in Rolling Stone magazine: " We tapped into our own version of 'Exile on Main Street'."

Say what?

Of course, they're obviously being modest. The next album after that will be their "White Album" and the one after that will no doubt be their "Dark Side Of The Moon".

And, of course, their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame can't be too far off either.

Maybe by then Billy Joe Armstrong will stop trying to look like Ann Wilson from Heart.
