Five Fun Facts About Eddy Grant!

Eddy Grant will always be known as the man behind the '80s mega-hit "Electric Avenue", but here are ten fun facts about the man you might not already know!

1. The song "Romancing The Stone" was commissioned by the producers of the sequel to the film "Jewel Of The Nile".  Having accepted the challenge of writing a theme song for the film, Grant spent several weeks crafting a song worthy of being the theme for what was sure to be the box-office hit of the summer.  In the end, the only part of his song that appears in the film itself is the guitar solo.

2.  Grant first hit #1 on the UK charts in 1968 as a member of the band The Equals, who hit the top spot with "Baby Come Back".

3. The Clash would later cover the Eddy grant-penned Equals' tune "Police On My Back" for their album Sandinista!

4. "Electric Avenue" spent five weeks at #2 on the US singles chart, kept from the top spot by the continued success of The Police's "Every Breath You Take".

5. Prior to "Electric Avenue" topping singles charts around the world, Grant hit #1 in the UK with "I Don't Wanna Dance" from the same album (Killer On The Rampage).  Figuring it would be a natural follow-up single to "Electric Avenue", Grant begged his U.S. label Portrait/Epic to release the song as a single.  Instead, they merely released the song as the B-side to subsequent pressings of "Electric Avenue".
