While Modern Lovers get a lot of mileage out of their perceived obscurity, very few bands who attempt songs from the band's repertoire manage to do so in a way that doesn't make you wish they hadn't and, granted, "Roadrunner" has been rendered impotent by numerous rote covers by the likes of Joan Jett, the Sex Pistols, the Jazz Butcher and more, Beach Slang somehow find a way to make the song sound as fresh and menacing as the original while bringing their own swagger to the track.
It is when the band turns their attention to DC pop icon Tommy Keene's "Nothing Can Change You" (from Keene's Based On Happy Times) that they superbly walk the line between reverence, imitation, and outright making a song their own.
The EP comes out February 10 on Champaign, IL's always dependable Polyvinyl Records and can be pre-ordered on the band's Bandcamp page.
